You Have Overcome
“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4 ESV
As each day dawns, there are so many opportunities for good. Regrettably, we are faced by a tireless enemy who will stop at nothing to attempt our defeat. We are constantly under assault on any front using any means available to him. One of the most effective tools used by that adversary is doubt. He presents us with excuses and roadblocks and questions to place a seed of doubt in our mind and finds every opportunity to erode the firm foundation of faith.
Praise be to God that we have verses from our brother John like this one to remind us that those attacks should be regarded with the proper perspective – we serve a mighty and awesome God who is so much greater than our enemy! In fact, our Father is so much greater, it’s almost laughable to even compare him to our foe!
The encouragement John offers here is that we need to put aside the doubts presented by those that the tempter would use to deter us from standing resolutely on the promises of God. By simply placing our faith in God and giving ourselves over to his leadership and guidance, we have already overcome! It’s not a “well, I think I can… maybe.” We have overcome – the outcome is already assured, we just have to remain active members of the team
Are we going to hit the mark every day, on every shot? No, but by committing to the perspective that we serve an awesome God whose mercies are new every day and never ceasing, we don’t have to be weakened by the doubts and fears. We don’t have to wonder how to make it through each day. With the unflinching faith and trust of a little child, we just need to hold to the hand of our Lord and Savior, Jesus, and follow confidently in his footsteps, every day.
