Discerning His Will
Wanting to please God in all that we do is an amazing motivator. Then comes the question, “What does God want me to do?” The answer is clear when there is a Bible verse to explain God’s will to us (1Thess. 4:3). However, the struggle of discerning God’s desire for us can become overwhelming in situations like, “Do I go to college?” or “What should my career be?” There are no Bible verses that tell us to choose Harvard over trade school or to become a lawyer instead of a teacher. In these situations, it’s not about shining God’s light in what you do, but how you do it.
God wants you to be a good person, regardless of career or physical achievement. 1 Thess. 5:12-15 explains that our goal is to strive for peace with all mankind through acts of kindness and having patience. Patience is important because there will always be people who respond to our good intentions with evil thoughts and actions. Through all circumstances, our commitment to exemplify God’s love and compassion remains constant (1 Peter 2:13-17). Getting others to know Christ is the only way evil can be silenced.
Showing God’s light to others allows our faith to grow with confidence and obedience. With a mature faith we will be able to rejoice in all situations, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thess. 5:16-18). If we communicate with God daily, His unbreakable love will become solidified in our hearts and enables us to do the will of God.
