Trusting in the Unchangeable God
How often has your life changed between today and the past week, month, or even year? One of the inevitabilities of life is that it is constantly changing. With modern technology, people are able to be constantly bombarded by the ever changing news like never before. Amidst all of life’s uncertainties, we are tend to seek out stability where we can see it. However, just because we can physically see a source of stability doesn’t mean it will remain permanent. All things physical can change. God, on the other hand, is a supernatural being that is beyond this physical existence. He is asking us to live a life of everlasting peace with Him in Heaven. Before we decide about whether we accept His invitation, we must first take the time to understand the God who is making this offer.
One of the first things that people should understand about God is that His word is absolute truth. Famed wild life expert, Steve Erwin once said, “Crocodiles are easy. They try to kill and eat you. People are harder. Sometimes they pretend to be your friend first.” People’s intentions are sometimes unclear because we can’t see into the mind and heart of another living person. What people say doesn’t always match what they think, feel, or do. How blessed are we that God isn’t like a person. Numbers 23:19 (ESV) reads, “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” God’s word is also absolute truth because it is perpetual. Therefore, His word always remains relevant and applicable. In Isiah 40:6-8, the prophet Isaiah writes that beauty fades and the grass dies, but God’s word is eternal. God’s says that His plans and attitude toward His children are for them to have a future with hope (Jeremiah 29:11).
God’s children can also trust His invitation because God’s plans and attitude have never changed (nor will they ever). In Malachi 3:16 (ESV), God says, “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” The Israelites at this time were enemies of God, yet, He still made this promise to save them. God being all loving and merciful, accomplished more than He promised. 1 John 2:1-2 says that Jesus shed His blood on the cross to atone for the sins of mankind. He also advocates on our behalf to God when we sin. Jesus’ blood will cleanse our spirits of past sins when we get baptized and having Him in Heaven as our advocate means we have a way to seek repentance. God’s children shouldn’t worry if God’s treatment is circumstantial because while we were still sinners, He gave us all a way to be eternally saved
