Your Redemption Is Drawing Near
Reading: Luke 21:20-38
Jesus continued teaching about the forthcoming destruction of Jerusalem (see Luke 21:6-7), and in doing so he gave practical direction and warnings for the people of that generation who would experience this event (v. 32). Herein we see an important principle of Bible study: while God’s word is written *to* specific people, that same word is written *for* all people.
While we cannot make direct application to some of Jesus’s warnings for an event that has already taken place, the concepts at play still need to guide our hearts and minds today: virtues like preparation, vigilance, and endurance will always be needed by God’s people right up until (and especially for when) the Lord returns.
Whatever the news, discouragement, or challenges of the day may be, we must stand up straight and focus on the redemption that comes nearer each day we live (v. 28; see also Romans 13:11). The same sinful behavior and cares of this temporary life (34) are just as much a threat to the souls of saints today as they were in the first century. So listen to the words of your Savior and put them into action this week: watch yourself, stay awake, and pray (vv. 34-36), knowing that our goal and hope is to stand before the Son of Man, justified by His blood.
